This exhibition aimed to recontextualise a seminal work by Daniel Buren, by ‘re-activating’ it at the Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere.
Voile Toile/Toile Voile, a work originally staged in Berlin in 1975, can be seen as one of Daniel Buren’s most poignant laments on the status of painting, yet by its nature it remains a work imbued with a latent romanticism, a quality that Buren would perhaps hope to distance himself from. This specific showing wished to emphasise this reading. The original sails made in 1975, where sailed on Grasmere by the R.Y.A. ‘Optimist Squad’ and then installed by Buren like paintings in the gallery at the Wordsworth Trust, alongside a newly commissioned wall painting.
A full colour catalogue accompanied the exhibition with essays by Daniel Sturgis, Robert Woof, and Jean-Paul Martinon, as well as a poem Regatta by Rebecca O’Connor.
The catalogue is available mail order from the Wordsworth Trust.
